Without a Compass is a memoir about a free-spirited second born male of a family whose parents wanted a girl and had only picked out a girl's name before his birth. Lex, raised by disengaged World War II parents, divorced when he was four. Surrounded by alcohol with his first stepfather and the rest of his family, he was very lonely and had no guidance to direct him or keep him safe and out of trouble. As a young boy he learned how to achieve his goals and teach himself whatever he needed to do. Chapter by chapter Lex writes his story about his journey of dangerous choices, always wondering how he endured his blunders. He learned the hard way all alone, he thought, until he realized he was never alone. He had the perfect mentor guiding him all along.

This book was a great read for me. His description of his adolescent years was very closely related to mine. We were consumed with the muscle cars and getting more speed from them. It was so easy to identify with the same decisions he had maturing into adulthood as myself. The draft board and the Vietnam War, pursuing a career and all those elements. I confess to being one of his classmates and smiling with his descriptions of some of our classmates and " the Rhino". He is spot on about Dr. Rhinearson. Many of us had interactions with him and he was fair and lead us to good conclusions. I thought he did an ouststanding job of describing some of his life events and the process of making life decisions that allowed him to be successful .Product details

Without a Compass A Memoir J Lex Butler 9781629011035 Books Reviews
Without a Compass is the story of growing up in simpler times right after World War II. The book is written from the perspective of someone who grew up in a single parent home in times when this was far less common than today. if you want to see what it was like to "invent" your own entertainment then this is the book for you. Despite making one poor choice after antoher this is also the story of success with a little help from an unexpected source. Want to see what it was like growing up in the early 1950's? Read this book! It is certainly a roller coaster ride through life. I highly recommend it.
Really enjoyed it, took me back to my childhood days.
Reading this book gave me pleasure, kinda like whenever I hear one of my favorite songs, Louis Armstrong singing " It's A Wonderful World!"
This is a great memoir, one of the best I have read. I 100% suggest this book.
More than the sum of one's parts - I have only ever known the author as the calm, grounded, well respected school counselor and father. So THAT'S where it came from? Who would have guessed; kudos to you!
As an older white, middle class male, I loved this book. It is a true-life "bildungsroman" to which all of us can relate. A different time and different temptations, but the same challenges! I was especially impressed with the clarity of the exposition by the author. Nothing fancy, but very communicative. No censors required!

As a younger reader than the author, it was fun to be transported to a different time than I knew and create a picture in my head of what it must've been like to grow up as he did. There were moments where I laughed out loud or had a "movie" playing in my head about some of the crazy things this young boy survived. Some seemed unbelievable until I saw the real picture in the book to prove it! It reminded me a little of the movie "Sandlot" at times. The book offers hope that no matter what the relationships you've been given in this life or what adversities you face, you can come out on the other side.
